This training is targeted at frontline staff who are supporting patients/clients/service users who have experienced trauma and have developed PTSD or cPTSD as a result. They may also have other mental health issues such as anxiety or depression, they may self-harm, they may have been diagnosed as having a personality disorder and may also have drug and alcohol problems. During this course we will only focus on PTSD and cPTSD
Target Audience
Care, Support & Clinical staff in a variety of settings:
Psychiatric hospitals, supported living for mental health, learning disability and autism.
Housing Support Teams & Probation teams, Victim support teams who are providing direct care and support.
This course is delivered using a range of methods and resources including:
Face to Face tutor participative facilitation (whether in the classroom or online), scenarios for group discussions, polls, question and answer time, videos and end of session assessment.
This course has been developed and mapped to current occupational standards, qualification frameworks and the following documents and resources:
- NICE guidelines on PTSD
- ICD 11 diagnostic criteria for PTSD and cPTSD
- Guideline for treatment and planning services for CPTSD in adults – UK psychological Trauma Society
- Trauma informed care toolkit for carers – Surrey & Borders Partnership
- Trauma informed framework – Scotland and Wales
Online training: it is recommended that each learner has their own laptop/computer/tablet as the course is interactive.Having all the learners in one room is not conducive to participative/interactive learning. 2 learners can share one screen if they make sure that the facilitator can both see and hear them clearly.
Levels 3 to 5: the course is aimed at learners at level 3 to 5
Learning Outcomes
After attending this course, learners will be able to:
- Define and describe the symptoms of PTSD & cPTSD
- Differentiate between PTSD & cPTSD
- List potentially Trauma inducing events
- Discuss the causes of PTSD – Risk factors and vulnerability
- Stress and trauma responses
- Give information on the various treatment options?
- Discuss the impacts of trauma (physical, psychological and social) in order to understand why traumatised people, behave in certain ways
- Explore self-care methods for a dysregulated nervous system caused by trauma
