Target Audience – Care, Support & Clinical staff in a variety of settings:

Psychiatric hospitals, community mental health support, supported living for mental health, learning disability and autism.

Housing Support Teams & Probation teams who are providing care & support.

Course Overview

This course has been developed to improve the understanding of Depression and how it affects an individual’s experience of living with this disorder. We will look at how to support someone who has this diagnosis (they may be undiagnosed) and the myths and stereotypes surrounding these.

This course is delivered using a range of methods and resources including:

Face to Face tutor participative facilitation (whether in the classroom or online), scenarios for group discussions, polls, question and answer time, videos and end of session assessment.

This course has been developed and mapped to current occupational standards, qualification frameworks and the following documents and resources:

  • The 2011 Gov.UK document – No Health without Mental Health (created by Dept of Health) 
  • Skills for Care – The Common Core Principles to support good mental health and wellbeing in adult social care
  • NICE guidelines: treatment & management of depression in adults (first time and chronic)

Levels 3 to 4: the course is aimed at learners at level 3 to 4

Learning Outcomes:

After attending this course, learners will be able to:

  • Distinguish facts from opinion concerning depression
  • List causes of depression.
  • Explain the difference between stress, anxiety and depression
  • Discuss the signs and symptoms of depression
  • Describe the effects of depression on the individual as well as the family and friends.
  • Explain treatment options for depression (professional, social support, self-help)

Add bipolar disorder – 3 hours – to form a one-day course. Mood disorders including depression in the morning and bi-polar in the afternoon
