Target Audience – Care, Support & Clinical staff in a variety of settings:
Supported living, schools, colleges, nursing homes, residential care homes, independent healthcare agencies, community centres, domiciliary care agencies, children’s homes, travel services transporting people with epilepsy and teams who are providing direct care and support for those living with epilepsy and who might need emergency buccal Midazolam.
This course is delivered using a range of methods and resources including:
Face to Face tutor participative facilitation (whether in the classroom or online), scenarios for group discussions, polls, question and answer time, videos and end of session assessment.
This course has been developed and mapped to current occupational standards, qualification frameworks and the following documents and resources:
- The Buccal Midazolam administering training module has been designed to meet the Joint Epilepsy Council (JEC) guidelines.
- ESNA (Epilepsy Nurses Association)
- International League Against Epilepsy (LIEA)
Online training: it is recommended that each learner has their own laptop/computer/tablet as the course is interactive. Having all the learners in one room is not conducive to participative/interactive learning. 2 learners can share one screen if they make sure that the facilitator can both see and hear them clearly.
Pre-requisite training
All learners must have completed epilepsy training prior to attending this training. A pre-course assessment will be carried out to determine this pre-requisite knowledge.
Learning Outcomes
After attending this course, learners will be able to:
- Describe various treatments for epilepsy
- Identify emergencies associated with epilepsy – status epilepticus & SUDEP
- Describe emergency or rescue medication in emergency seizure situations – buccal midazolam and the available brand names of buccal midazolam
- Appropriate dose instructions
- Video demonstration sitting and lying administration of buccal midazolam
- Practical – administer ‘buccal midazolam’ (water) to a colleague in the sitting position, then the lying down position and then place in the recovery position – If training is on-line, this will only be demonstrated
Starting times are flexible to accommodate shifts and schools. Duration is not flexible.
